MayaMalavaGowla

The first thing that strikes one's mind while talking about Carnatic Music is,S-R-G-M-P-D-N-S.Wondered what raagam it could be???
Its called MayamalavaGowla.

It is traditionally the first raagam that is taught to a beginner. The reason is traced back to the prolific composer-Purandaradasa.He is considered as the Sangeetha Pitamaha.

Sangeetha Pitamaha-Purandaradasa

He was the one who formulated the various swara exercises. It is consists of Sarali Varisai,Jhanta Varisai,Thaattu Varisai and so on.All these contain only these seven swaraas. And the various combinations form the Varisais.

The first and foremost being,

S-R-G-M-P-D-N-S
S-N-D-P-M-G-R-S

There's an underlying reason as to why Purandaradasa chose MayamalavaGowla to compose all the basic exercises. It is because, the pitch difference between Ma and Ga was the same as Da-Ni.So that learning could be made easier.

S-P-S-P-S

Well...This blog is purely dedicated to CARNATIC MUSIC!!!.The greatest ever thing that can happen to the mankind.

The title of the blog is "S-P-S-P-S".Well....these are called "Adhara Shruthi",meaning "BASE NOTES".Any singer, before singing, sings these notes to identify the pitch and also to see where the Adhara Shruthi falls in that octave.Only then any song can be sung.It is like..."bowing in humbleness" to these swaras and thanking them for all the beautiful compositions that have risen out of them.

In Carnatic Music,or Karnataka Sangeetham,as it is favouritely called by the rasikas,S-R-G-M-P-D-N-S are the basic notes. With these notes, composers have created wonders!!!The various combinations of these basic notes, called SWARAS forms what is called a RAAGA.

Well...I've started this with the Adhara Shruthi.Keep watching this blog for more swaraas!!!
